National Scientific and Technological Research Council (CONICET)

1. Introduction:

CONICET is the main agency that fosters science and technology in Argentina and one of the most important in Latin America. Currently, the Council has more than 15 thousand full-time researchers, 11 thousand doctoral and postdoctoral fellows, 2,600 technicians and professional support staff, and 1,600 administrative employees. They all operate across the whole country -from the Antarctic up to the Puna, from the Andes Mountain Range up to the Argentine Sea- in 15 Scientific and Technological Centers (CCT), 11 research and transference centers (CIT), a Multidisciplinary Research Center and more than 280 Institutes and exclusive CONICET Centers under the scope of national universities and other institutions. Four areas of knowledge of CONICET: Agrarian, Engineering and Material Sciences; Biological and Health Sciences; Exact and Natural Sciences; Social Sciences and the Humanities.

  • CONICET today: Currently, CONICET is an autarchic entity that depends on the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. After sixty years of work, CONICET is the most important asset of the country in terms of science and technology.
  • It promotes research and scientific and technological development in the whole country.
  • It has a leading role at a national and international level in terms of the training of high-quality human resources.
  • It has an evaluation system implemented from the beginning of the Council and updated according to its own and some international experience. This participatory and complex assessment system contemplates and takes into account the quality of the research projects -national and international-, their productivity and the career paths of the scientists and research team.
  • It represents a source of information and advice for the different institutions of the National Government, civil society and the private sector.
