Introduction:

Founded in May 1977, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences is China’s leading academic institution for philosophy and social science research and a comprehensive national high-end think tank. Formerly it was the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences set up in 1955 under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Chinese Academy of Social Sciences consists of 6 academic divisions (Academic Division of Marxist Studies, Academic Division of Philosophy and Literature, Academic Division of History (Chinese Academy of History), Academic Division of Economics, Academic Division of Social, Political and Legal Studies, and Academic Division of International Studies, 41 research institutes, and 173 nonphysical research centers, and supervises 113 state-level academic organizations. As of today, the Academy has about 4,000 full-time employees, 3/4 of whom are scientific research fellows, and 60% of them hold senior professional titles. The Academy boasts a team of highly accomplished academic experts and scholars enjoying fame at home and abroad and a group of young and middle-aged backbone researchers cutting a figure in academic theory research. With the advantages of comprehensive disciplines, concentrated talents, and abundant data, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences carries out creative theoretical exploration and policy research in the process of China’s reform and opening up, and modernization, and undertakes the mission of improving the level of humanities and social sciences in China as a whole.

As of today, the Academy has published 14,300 academic works, 160,200 academic papers and 28,000 research reports. In addition, it has a large number of academic data, translation works, textbooks, reference books, edited ancient books, theoretical promotion articles and other forms of scientific research achievements. Scientific research achievements of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences contribute to explaining, complementing and furthering the theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics; offer theoretical basis and policy advice for the national reform and opening-up and for making decisions on economic development; function as theoretical guidance and implementation plan for social development and democracy and legal system building; organize and carry forward the traditional history and culture, and advance the development of socialist culture and ideology; have incorporated the outstanding sciences and cultures of various countries to advance science causes in China. Many of those research achievements have had a significant effect in domestic and overseas academic circles and generated remarkable social benefits in the reform and opening-up, and social and economic development.

Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has carried out the academic exchange in more than 140 countries and regions and built academic exchange relationships with over 200 research institutes, academic organizations and institutions of higher learning overseas. More than 200 academic exchange agreements have been entered into with foreign parties. It plays an increasingly important role in China’s cultural and people-to-people exchanges with other countries.
